A History Dating to 1883

The Colombo Tea Auction was established in 1883 as the tea industry on the island grew rapidly following the collapse of the coffee sector. For much of the 20th century it competed with the London Tea Auction, but when London's auction closed in 1998, Colombo became the undisputed primary market for Ceylon tea — and one of the largest commodity auctions in the world by volume.

How It Works

Each week, tea producers submit samples from their estates to licensed tea brokers. Brokers taste and evaluate every lot, then publish catalogues with their assessments and recommended reserve prices. On auction day, registered buyers — ranging from local packers to multinational tea companies — bid for lots. The highest bidder above the reserve price wins.

The entire process from estate to auction typically takes one to two weeks, meaning Ceylon tea moves from leaf to buyer remarkably quickly compared to most agricultural commodities.

Prices That Shape the Industry

Colombo auction prices are closely watched by industry analysts globally. They reflect supply conditions (rainfall, harvest volumes), quality assessments (altitude, region, grade), and global demand patterns. A poor monsoon in Uva, for example, will tighten supply of high-grown tea and push prices upward within weeks.

The Digital Transition

In recent years, the Colombo auction has embraced digital platforms, allowing international buyers to participate remotely. This has broadened the buyer pool and improved price discovery — good news for both producers seeking fair value and buyers seeking premium single-origin teas.
