Sourcing and Sustainability: How Ceylon Blends Works with Spice Farmers

Behind every jar of Ceylon Blends spice is a relationship with a farmer. Here is how we source — and why it matters.

From Garden to Jar

Most spices in the global commodity chain change hands four or five times before reaching a consumer. At Ceylon Blends, we work directly with small-holder growers — buying at the farm gate, handling processing ourselves, and building multi-year relationships.

Our Farmer Network

We source from over 60 family farms across Sri Lanka: the cinnamon gardens of Matara and Galle, the pepper and clove estates of the Matale highlands, and the cardamom plots of the Knuckles Mountain Range. Farmers receive a premium above market prices. We pay on delivery — small farmers cannot absorb 90-day commercial payment terms.

Sustainable Practices

  • No synthetic pesticides — all partner farms use integrated pest management or certified organic methods.
  • Shade-grown spices — cinnamon and pepper planted under forest canopy retain moisture and support biodiversity.
  • Sun-dried, not machine-dried — preserving essential oils and reducing energy use.
  • Recyclable packaging — glass jars and FSC-certified cardboard boxes.

Traceability

Every batch is tagged with a harvest code. Scan the QR code on the jar to see the source farm, harvest date, and the farmer by name.
